Last week in talking to one of our Care Givers at Senior’ Choice at Home, I was impressed when she told me how much joy she found in her senior care work. I asked her to think about what it was that made it so much fun for her, and she wrote me the following letter about her work with a client in Plymouthm MN:

Hi Marilyn,
The reason I have so much fun working with the elderly is I get more back than I give. It’s like having a Grandmother. I have learned what it was like when the price of gas was 15 cents/gallon! (wow–with today’s prices that is mind-boggling.) It’s like having a history lesson. Those memories from years ago are so vivid for these elderly people, and I don’t mind that they can’t remember where they misplaced their purse or that they can’t remember to turn off the stove.
It is difficult for family to see them fade away as the brain seems to shrink–truly a difficult disease. My purpose is to help ease that family burden, to care for the client, and to help them both by being able to keep these elderly in their homes as long as possible. It is a gift to be able to go into their homes and be a small part of the family. These families have special loved ones, all with unique personalities and priceless stories. All I need to do is listen. I especially like to share my faith if that is okay with the family.
Sincerely,
Pam L.
